MLB AwardWatch Week 1
It is far too early to accurately predict these sorts of things. The rookies that will win ROY aren’t playing in the bigs just yet, and as Chase Utley showed us last year, injuries can kill anyone’s MVP hopes very quickly. However, the AwardWatch exists to name the top players in the league AT THE MOMENT, the guys who will win these awards IF THEY KEEP UP their performance. And so, without further adieu…
NL:
MVP: Hanley Ramirez… He has the Marlins off to another great start. He sure can hit the ball hard, and he’s got an OBP over 500 through the first few games of the season. Not long anyone didn’t see this coming, but he’s hitting the ball hard and showing why he was a fantasy must-have. He’ll probably go 30-30 at this pace, which will be good for a Marlins team that is trying to build on last year's early success.
Cy Young: Chris Carpenter… In his debut this season, Chris Carpenter brought back memories of… well… Chris Carpenter. 7 innings, 7 strikeouts, no runs. He ended last season well and, unlike some of the other guys that threw debut shutouts, we have seen what Carpenter is capable of.
ROY: Jordan Schafer… Who knows? Jordan Schafer has as good a chance as anyone, but like we said, not many rookies are playing in the bigs right now. Schafer’s first at bat ended with a Home Run, and he has quite quick out there in center field, giving him even more value.
AL:
MVP: Adam Lind… Really. He has led Toronto out of the gate at full gallop, already blasting three homers and leading the AL in RBIs for the first week. We’ll see if he can keep it up, but his work has been impressive so far.
Cy Young: Josh Beckett… The Boston pitcher brought his best stuff to the field against Tampa Bay last week. Like Carpenter, his talent is no secret, but the fact that he has brought his game so well back after a down season is a bit of a pleasant surprise in Boston. He logged 10 Ks on the well-stocked Rays.
ROY: Elvis Andrus… He has gotten off to a good start, and we can’t really judge any of the other AL prospects because none of the other important ones are playing in the Show yet. Andrus is quick, a great fielder, and really, really young. He has good upside but he also has shown great progression already in his career.
