MLB AwardWatch Week 2
The AwardWatch exists to name the top players in the league AT THE MOMENT, the guys who will win these awards IF THEY KEEP UP their performance. After 2 weeks, some names have changed, some haven't. And so, without further adieu…
NL:
MVP: Ryan Ludwick… It is pretty amazing that Ludwick is turning into such a good player at 30. But he has been even better than teammate Albert Pujols, and his bat is propelling the Cardinals past everyone else in that division besides the mighty Cubs. If he continues to play at this level, the Redbirds will challenge Chicago for Central supremacy. His batting average and RBIs have allowed the Cardinals to keep bringing batters to the plate to put up more and more runs.
Cy Young: Johan Santana… Tough times in St. Louis; our CY Young pick was Chris Carpenter last week. Poor guy got injured again, but even if he hadn't, a certain New York hurler has been stunning in 3 games of work, and with him on the mound the Mets have a shot at that elusive NL East title. Johan Santana is going to run away with the award if he keeps playing like he can. The only thing stopping him will be his record if the Mets don't give him run support.
ROY: Jordan Schafer… He has started to slip, but no change because not many rookies are playing in the bigs right now. Schafer’s first at bat ended with a Home Run and his defense is a boon for the Braves. He needs to get back on the horse and get his BA above 270 after a slow week.
AL:
MVP: Miguel Cabrera… When the season began a lot of people questioned Detroit's ability to win after losing a few players in the offseason. Miguel Cabrera leads the AL in homers, batting average, and slugging percentage, looking like the MVP talent he was born to be. Adam Lind has started to cool off. Kevin Youkilis is looking good in Boston, so watch out for him if Cabrera starts to come back to Earth… but we don't see that happening any time soon. Unlike Adam Lind, Cabrera has proven for years now that he is the real deal.
Cy Young: Zack Greinke… The Kansas City pitcher has not given up a run in three starts. Josh Beckett has been good but Greinke has looked unhittable. It is too bad that he plays for the Royals; overcoming run support like that will be tough, but if he keeps this up it won't matter. Wow.
ROY: Elvis Andrus… He has gotten off to a good start, and we can’t really judge any of the other AL prospects because none of the other important ones are playing in the Show yet. Andrus is quick, a great fielder, and really, really young. He has good upside but he also has shown great progression already in his career. Not much new to say this week.
