MLB Power Rankings Week 6
We won't waste time with introductions. We have been away too long to spend any more of your precious time… Here are the Week 6 rankings.
1. Blue Jays: Disagree with us if you like but the Blue Jays refuse to lose these days. They are back in control of the AL East. The Jays have a winning combination of shutdown pitching on clutch hitting. Since we've been gone, the Blue Jays have won a lot of games against the Sox and Yankees, and continue to beat up on challengers to their dominance.
2. Dodgers: No Manny, no problem, right? Right… for now at least. The Dodgers maintain a high ranking because even without Ramirez, they won several games this past week like they really are a good team. However, we will see how they hold up; they are locked in a bat
3. Red Sox: With continued success, the Red Sox stay put too. Sorry, not many changes in our top 3. Trouble may be brewing, however, with the benching of Big Papi. He has played very poorly and you have to wonder if Boston is really ready to play at a championship level sans Ortiz.
4. Yankees: It is rather surprising, as we have continually noted, that the Yankees are only the third best team in their division. Texeira looks bad and their pitching hasn't quite settled in. Still, A-Rod's embattled return could push the Yankees back to the top, so we will withold judgment as he does his best to show us what's up over the next month.
5. Phillies:
Believe what you will about the NL East race. We have been back and forth rating the Mets higher and then rating the Phils higher. But the Phillies' lineup, which includes AwardWatch contender Raúl Ibañez and superstars Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, is just more impressive than a Mets team that will be lacking power hitter Carlos Delgado for the rest of ever. Much has been made about the struggles of Jimmy Rollins but his bat may finally be coming alive, and his counterpart Jose Reyes hasn't been able to find the field recently. Neither team can pitch, so it comes down to this slightly Philly-favoring battle of the bats.
6. Mets: See above about why the Mets are ranked 6th and the Phils are ranked 5th. It is not, however, a clearcut matter by any means, especially if Carlos Beltran has anything to say about it. He has been the hottest thing in Queens since Johan Santana.
7. Brewers: They have a great record, so they make it to 7th this week; losing Rickie Weeks for the season, however, might put the Brewers a little lower as the weeks (teehee… ok, sorry) go by. He was really playing good baseball this year.
8. Tigers: Earlier in the season, we had an inkling that these guys might make a play for their division. With the Twins and Indians playing poorly, Miguel Cabrera might just be able to will this team to the playoffs.
9. Cardinals: Albert Pujols makes every pitcher week in the knees. He launched a grand slam a few days ago that reminded everyone watching just how incredible he is. The Cardinals' hero is on pace to hit more than 200 ribbies. He has cooled a bit (which for him means that he is hitting only in the .320s) and St. Louis has lost a few games, allowing the Cubs to creep back into the picture in a now surprisingly four-way race for the central (the Reds being the fourth team).
10. Cubs: The Cubs have a lot of talent but aren't winning as many games as they should. They barely keep the Reds an Johnny Cueto out of the top 10.
