Weekend Best Bets: May 1

1 May 2009 10 views No Comment

Look no further for info and picks from this weekend's sports (and by sports we mean baseball and football) festivities. Every week, the Best Bet will tell you what to watch and who to put your money on, so check back Thursdays (or sometimes Fridays if we get lazy) before you make your weekend plans! Since football is unfortunately in its off-season, we are left with only Major League Baseball to watch and bet on.

LAST WEEK: 1-2

OVERAL: 1-2

On to the picks…

MLB

Friday: Cardinals vs. Nationals… No, your eyes are not deceving you. Watch this game; why? Because we think Jordan Zimmermann and his 2.38 ERA are going to be a great matchup against Ludwick and Pujols… And we actually think that that Nationals are going to win. The general lameness of Cardinals' pitcher Todd Wellemeyer will certainly help their situation.

OUR MONEY IS ON THE NATIONALS.

Saturday: Mets vs. Phillies… Jamie Moyer will bring his three wins and his 46 years of age to bear against the struggling Oliver Perez at the Bank. The Mets, like the Phillies, have displayed horrid pitching this year, and the notion that the high ERA of Oliver Perez will be offset by the New York's retooled bull pen does not really hold much water considering the last outing of expensive free agent acquisition J.J. Putz. With Delgado and Castillo injured, there is a lot of pressure on strikeout monster David Wright to perform.

OUR MONEY IS ON THE PHILLIES.

Sunday: Marlins vs. Cubs… These two very good teams, both of whom are near the top of our Power Rankings, will meet on Sunday in a matchup that pits Big Z against Ricky Nolasco. Zambrano has two wins but his ERA is a little suspect in the early going; Nolasco was projected to have a great year but has been pretty bad in his first several starts. The Cubs offense has really sputtered over the last few games, so it will be interesting to see if they can turn it back on this weekend. Nolasco and his struggle to get batters out will be a good opportunity for the Cubbies to do so this Sunday.

OUR MONEY IS ON THE CUBS.
